Bamenda Station Road Needs Stringent Safety Measures After Tree Saves 70+ Lives

The Accident Scene At Up Station

By Raymond Dingana

Passengers of a 70 seater bus that left Bamenda on the evening of Thursday, April 24, 2025, will forever be grateful to a tree that saved their lives along Station Road.

The bus, operated by a Bamenda based transport agency, was prevented from plunging off the steep hill thanks to a one of the eucalyptus tree planted beside the road. As the vehicle ascended Station Hill, it suffered a breakdown and began to roll backward.

Miraculously, one of the trees along that stretch stopped the bus from tumbling down the cliff. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident.

Editorial Comment

What transpired on Station Hill that night serves as a stark warning to the authorities in Bamenda that they must take intentional steps to ensure the safety of the population. Officials must be proactive and stop looking away until tragedy strikes. Had that tree not been there, we would be mourning the loss of over 70 lives, reason why more still needs to be done.

Now is the time to reflect on what can be done to prevent such near disasters. Planting more trees, installing guardrails, and implementing other safety measures are essential to safeguarding lives.

To add, transport operators must ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles to prevent breakdowns.

If these actions are taken, we can help ensure that such frightening incidents do not happen again.

And the tree that saved lives didn't just sprout out of its own. They were intentionally planted to serve for risk management. This was done during the era of Ngwa Che Francis as Regional.Delegate of Environment and Forestry for the North West and continued during the era of Fonye Francis Wadtzela who was Regional Delegate for Environment and Protection of Nature. These acts of tree planting were intentional and meant to serve only one purpose: hold back vehicles from flying overboard the cliff and save lives
