Bamenda II Mayor Donates School Needs To Kids, Warns Proprietors Increasing Fees.

The mayor of the Bamenda II Council, Peter Chenwi has frowned at school authorities that have taken upon themselves to increase school fees despite the hardship parents are experiencing as a result of the persisting Anglophone crisis and other challenges. Speaking at the Epic Center , Saturday October 03, 2020 during an event to hand over didactic material to hundreds of children in the school going age bracket, the mayor said, owners of private schools cannot be increasing school fees when the economy of the area is witnessing a downtrend warning them that, their schools may be shut down:

“There was a meeting to that effect because authorities cannot be increasing school fees when people are dying, the economy is on the downtrend and school authorities are increasing fees. We have to call those proprietors to order, if they are not stop, then we will sign out their schools,” Mayor Chenwi warned.

With the children equipped with the necessary tools to resume School come Monday 5^th October, one thing that will affect them negatively is the cost of transport as indicated by parents who blamed it on the restriction of the circulation of motor bikes in the urban perimeters of the town of Bamenda. Addressing that worry, Mayor Peter Chenwi said, the Bamenda II council has acquired ten taxis that will be ferrying kids to school for free:

“We have noted that, not all parents have the means to provide transportation for their children reasons why, ten town ship taxis have been made available by the council to be transporting children for free. We have to communicate with parents, give them secrete numbers and codes to use on the taxis. The taxis will be well protected and we have a territorial boundary that they can’t exceed,” said the mayor.

Apart from the books, pens, rulers and others provided by the mayor, financial support from fifty thousand francs also offered to the children especially those living with special needs. Containers of hand sanitizers provided by Minister Mbayu Felix were also distributed to the kids who came out in their numbers to be reinforced as they prepare for back to school.

According to Persistent, one of the beneficiaries, the items she received will help her go to school and produce good results at the end. She says, for the fast years, it has not been easy as they have been attending classes in hiding because of insecurity. She thanked the mayor for coming to their aid so that they can go to school without fear.

Parents are now waiting to see whether, something will be done to cause private school owners to stop the practice of swelling school fees as their own contribution to the back to school effort. To them, all those providing school needs to children will see their effort useless if they fail to look towards that direction. Though they hugely appreciated the gesture, they say it will make no sense given things that don’t cost much only for them to be forced to pay tens of thousands of FCFA and in some cases more than one hundred thousand FCFA as school fees before their children can even use the school material offered them.
