Dieudonné Tantoh Forba, widely known as Farmer Tantoh, has been awarded the prestigious Earthna Prize for Environmental Sustainability in Water Resource Management, organized by the Qatar Royal Family under the Qatar Foundation. The award was presented to him recently by Her Excellency Sheikha Hind Bint Hamad Al Thani in Qatar's capital city of  Doha.

As many neighborhoods struggle with water shortages, community members like Farmer Tantoh are taking significant steps to address the issue, earning international recognition for their efforts.

Farmer Tantoh’s contributions to environmental sustainability, particularly in water resource management, have won him remarkable accolades worldwide.

"I realized that we can be the change we want to see in our community by stopping the blame game. After contracting typhoid in agricultural school, I felt compelled to find solutions, which led me to research water resources extensively. I started building and protecting springs in the mountains and constructing wells for clean water, which ultimately led to my recognition as a winner."

Farmer Tantoh's initiatives have significantly impacted many communities.

"In the Northwest Region, we found that while there is enough water, many lack knowledge of water conservation techniques. That’s why we are spreading this knowledge. In my Eco Village, we have an aquifer that can pump over 30 liters of water daily, especially during the peak of the dry season. We provide ten thousand liters of water free to the community each day."

He said.

He views this effort as his own form of Corporate Social Responsibility, stating,

"No one should die from a lack of something essential for life, like clean water. Access to safe drinking water is a fundamental human right."

Currently, Farmer Tantoh is working on projects in eight communities, including Nkambe in Donga Mantung, Bafut, and Sisia Quarter in Nkwen, Bamenda III where they constructed a 20,000 liter reservoir. Projects are underway in the interior villages of Nwa to address local water issues.

The award has further motivated him to intensify his mission in environmental sustainability, particularly in water resource management
"This recognition will empower me to replicate my ideas in other communities by raising awareness about water catchment preservation and conservation techniques."

To ensure access to potable water in these communities, Farmer Tantoh is mentoring young leaders to represent him in various areas.

"I am launching the Farmer Tantoh New Village Environmental Movement to identify fellows in different villages. So far, we have identified 11 representatives, with the first already active in one of the villages in Nwa."

He is also establishing a training center for future environmental activists. Since 2005, his program has trained over 500 volunteers.

Notably, Farmer Tantoh has been dedicated to grassroots efforts in environmental sustainability for 29 years, focusing specifically on water resource management.
