The people of Bamenda II Municipality could soon enjoy better protection against fire disasters following the donation of a firefighting truck by Canadian partners to the council.

Mayor Peter Chenwi, currently on a working visit to Canada, disclosed the development during an interview with Abakwa FM Radio on Wednesday. He highlighted that the firefighting truck will support other emergency response mechanism already put in place by government.

"the firefighting truck will strengthen the municipality's ability to respond quickly to fire outbreaks, helping to save lives and reduce damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure."

In recent years, several families and business owners have suffered huge losses from fires, like the case of the Bamenda main Market often due to delays and inadequate resources in emergency response. The availability of a firefighting truck in the municipality is expected to improve intervention time and provide greater protection to the population.

Beyond the firefighting equipment, Mayor Chenwi also announced that he has received a confirmation letter for the establishment of a waste-to-energy plant in Bamenda II. The project is expected to transform waste into energy while addressing growing sanitation challenges within the municipality.

Once operational, the plant is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for young people. Opportunities are likely to emerge in waste collection, transportation, sorting, recycling and plant operations. The initiative is also expected to contribute to a cleaner environment and improve public health.

"Proper waste management remains one of the key priorities of the council and the project will help reduce the volume of waste currently found in some neighbourhoods,"

 said Mayor Chenwi.

While in Canada, Mayor Chenwi also took the opportunity to showcase products from Bamenda II and the North West Region. Honey, coffee, locally designed clothing and other products were presented to Canadian partners and investors.

According to the mayor, "

"the goal was to highlight the economic potential of the municipality and attract partnerships that could create opportunities for local producers and entrepreneurs. Increased exposure for local products could open new markets, boost incomes and encourage business growth."

For many residents, the developments announced from Canada represent hope for improved services, job creation and stronger economic growth. If successfully implemented, the firefighting truck, waste-to-energy plant and new partnerships could significantly improve the lives of people living in Bamenda II and beyond.
