Humanitarian Assistance: “They Gave Us Blankets Without Mattresses To Sleep On” – IDPs

Some Internally Displaced Persons in Bamenda have lashed out at those in charge of the distribution of Humanitarian Aid to IDPs for giving them Blankets without Mattresses to sleep on. During the distribution exercise, the first after the Major National Dialogue in an event that took place at the esplanade of the NW Governor’s office, Friday October 11, 2019, the IDPs asked the question as to whether they should continue sleeping on bare floor and cover the blankets. Even when the Governor of the NWR, Adolph Lele L’afrique was addressing the closed to four hundred beneficiaries, they could be heard shouting saying they need mattresses.
“We are six of us in the house and I am a patient. I left the hospital just to come and collect the humanitarian aid. I am so disappointed because, what actually brought me here was the mattress. This is because; I don’t have a mattress to sleep on with my children”. An internally displaced mother from Ndop laments.
Victor is another IDP who also decried the fact that mattresses were not among the items he and others received from the Bamenda Regional Center for Humanitarian Assistance: “My problem now is the mattresses which were never given us. This is because we cannot sleep on the floor. I just hope that the mattresses will be given to us in any time soon. I am from Mbiame and we are eight of us the house and life is not easy for us. We really need help”.
This other youth though angry that he was going back without a mattress says he was going home a happy man because he was able to receive other items. Read him: “I have seen my friends collecting mattresses but I came here and could not be given a mattress. The rice and vegetable oil I have received today will help me a lot because I will not buy any of these items for some time. We are ten in the house”. “Though I am angry that I have not received a mattress, I am somehow happy that I am not going back empty handed”. He concluded.
Addressing the worries of the IDPs in relation to the fact that, they were going home without mattresses, the Sub Director of Civil Protection, Mr. Tchiente Gilbert says, : “We are aware of the fact that they are living in such tough conditions. We are just trying to help them so that tomorrow, they will go back to their homes. What the state can give is what is given”.
“Those whose official identification documents have been destroyed in the course of the crises can use any document that can identify them. They could also get a note from the head of their host communities in order to permit them register and receive the humanitarian aid”. He added.
Items like 5kg of Rice, Tablets of Soap, about four litters of Vegetable Oil, Blankets, Buckets and Ten Thousand francs for transport were among some of the items IDP took home Friday October 11, 2019.

Road Accident Leaves Two Persons Dead Along Bamenda-Bambili Stretch

Chattered Vehicles As A Result Of Accident  By Raymond Dingana Township taxi drivers in Bamenda are still in shock following the death of one of theirs who died alongside his passenger at the Mile 6 neighborhood in Nkwen, on the Bamenda-Bambili road, Friday March 15, 2024. The accident that didn't only take away lives but caused enormous damages on the two vehicles involved has been attributed to over speeding. "The black private car was on top speed when it suddenly found itself on the other said of the road colliding with the taxi. The occupants of the private owned vehicle fled the scene after the accident. The vehicle was coming from the Mile 6 direction while the taxi was heading towards Bamenda, " explained a witness. The passenger whose only name drayinfos got as Tigwe died on the spot, while the driver of the Starlet vehicle died later at the Regional Hospital in Bamenda.   Cross Section Of Protesting Crowd At Up Station  By Raymond Dingana The early hours of Thursday April 4,2024 was a tensed one at the Bamenda I council area following the stabbing to death of the young man identified as Junior Awazi popularly known as BJ by a uniform officer in civilian attire. The incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday breaking Thursday April 4 in a beer parlor at Up Station, Bamenda I Council area. The population was out in the streets expressing their grievances demanding justice for the slain young man. " It all started when the uniform officer in civilian attire wounded a girl's hand after she rejected his love advances.
