Homage To Gouache Landslide Victims: Drivers Of Funeral Vans Refused Conveying Bodies.

By Raymond Dingana.

Drivers of Hearses or Funeral Vans meant for the conveying of mortal remains to their final destinations last Saturday November 09, 2019, refused conveying the mortal remains of some of the victims of the GOUACHE LANDSLIDE in the West Region of Cameroon. Sources on the ground indicated to DrayInfos that, the drivers were protesting against the nonpayment of their complete fee of One Hundred Thousand FCFA after receiving an advanced payment of Fifty Thousand FCFA.
Talking to DrayInfos, an eye witnesses indicated that, the contract to convey the corpses was secured by a native of the West Region who then contracted the Hearses or Funeral Van Services. It was agreed that, the fee was to be One Hundred Thousand FCFA each and that advanced payments of Fifty Thousand Francs was to be paid and the money completed only after the services must have been rendered.
After the ceremony to pay homage to the deceased came to an end on a day that was declared a Day Of National Mourning chaired by Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Chief Dr. Dion Ngute whereby, the Flag of Cameroon was flown at Half Mast, the caskets containing the victims were then loaded in to the funeral vans only for the drivers to start demanding the payment of the complete sum before they could move. They say millions of FCFA was set aside for the event and that; it was hard to understand why all their money was not paid.
As if that was not enough, families of deceased women grounded the Hearses or funeral vans asking the families of their husbands whom many also died in the landslide to pay the bride Price of the deceased before taking the corpses for burial causing the drivers to pack the vans just around the residence of the Governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustine. It took the intervention of the authorities of the Region who had a talk with the drivers even though reports from some quarters alleged that, they were threatened by authorities before the corpses were conveyed to their final resting places.
Many in Bafoussam saw this as a slap to the face of the people of the West Region who could not understand why despite all what happened; money could be at the center as to why victims of the landslide were treated the way they were treated, allowed under the sun alongside their relatives who had almost cried out all the tears in their eyes.
It should be noted that, a total of Forty Three people dies in the landslide while eleven others are currently responding to treatment at the Bafoussam Regional Hospital.  Five Internally Displaced Persons, a man, wife and three children from the restive Anglophone Regions of the country also perished. There was also a family that lost eleven members. There is a girl who sneaked out to see her boy friend only to come back and saw that, her family members were gone and many other stories. Many houses in the affected areas have been demolished while some plots of land to resettle the affected families have been earmarked.
