Aghem Women Defend Selves Against Hausa/Fulani Attacks.

By Raymond Dingana.

Enough is enough, we are not afraid of death any more, we will defend ourselves, we are getting killed for nothing, what is our crime, who told you that you own Wum, Wum is for all of us” These were some of the things the Ahem women were saying when they went out recently in Wum accusing some members of the Fulani/Hausa communities for killing their relatives and burning down their houses.
Reports from Wum say, the women went out in their numbers recently to confront the armed Fulani and Hausa youths whom they say are backed by the Cameroon military. Talking to DrayInfos Ngum, a commercial bike rider said, the women as they emptied themselves in to the streets were saying they have been pushed to the wall and were ready to fight back.
He furthered that, before the women even went out to confront the armed Fulani  and Hausa youths, closed to five houses had been razed and about four persons killed under unclear circumstances with accusing fingers pointing at men wearing military uniforms  and members of the Fulani and Hausa communities.
These killings and the burning of houses did not deter the women as they went out in full force to defend themselves shouting enough is enough . They say they are being killed for nothing, forced to dig graves and bury loved ones because all their sons and husbands have either fled or have been killed by some members of the Hausa /Fulani communities and those supporting them.
As the women poured themselves out armed with sticks and clubs to for a showdown with the armed youths who were advancing from the other direction, they were intercepted by the military who after listening to the women decided to confront the other side asking them to retreat. Reports say they retreated without any hesitation as if to say it was their master talking to them.
DrayInfos also gathered that, before they were asked to retreat, they had already attacked and stabbed a young man by name Ernest, who was a worker at the Wum Public Hospital. Ernest was stabbed on the neck when his home at the Bigetsi neighborhood came under attack.
Wum, found in Menchum Division of the North West Region of Cameroon have for some time now been facing a lot of challenges caused by the Sociopolitical crisis rocking the two English speaking regions of the country and the long standing farmer -grazer conflicts.
In 2019, videos circulated online showing Hausa/Fulani youths carrying machetes and other weapons promising death to the Aghem community. The video was allegedly taken by armed men in military attires whom reports say did nothing to arrest the situation and prevent it from escalating.
Things have long degenerated with hundreds of houses razed, many killed and many others wounded while others have fled and are taking refuge in bushes and neighboring communities. DrayInfos have not heard of any arrest, however, the Aghem community have blamed government forces for backing the Fulani and Hausa communities against them and that they are also taking part in carrying out atrocities against them. Government forces have not yet reacted to these accusations.
