Intercultural Dialogue, Way Out Of Intercultural Conflicts.

 By Raymond Dingana

The North West Region of Cameroon is one of those areas where intercultural clashes especially between Grazers and non Grazers are so rampant. These clashes have sometimes resulted to both human and material loses particularly where intercultural talks are not in attendance. During a 3-day training of journalists, who are members of the Association of Cultural Journalists, ACJ, to brainstorm on issues concerning Cultural Diversity and Cultural Rights, organized by the Mbororo Cultural and Development Association, MBOSCUDA, members were enjoined to sensitize the public on the need of dialogue amongst others as the way out of conflicts between cultures.

They are to promote the role of intercultural dialogue. It is when people dialogue that, there is mutual understanding of the various cultures. So if we understand each other’s culture, we will understand why we do certain things differently. Once that is done, tolerance will steep in thereby baring the way for intercultural quarrels. Journalists can also mitigate intercultural conflicts by informing, educating and sensitizing the communities on the different aspects of other people’s culture and the importance of respecting the cultural rights of others. If all these are done, we must have barred the way for intercultural clashes. Shei William Nkanji, consultant for MBOSCUDA indicated.

During the 3-day come together at the conference room of a renowned Hotel in Bamenda, the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for MBOSCUDA, Sali Usmanu said strengthening the reporting skills of  journalists on culture is another way to promote culture because, the journalists have acquired the necessary skills in producing programs and writhing articles on culture. He said, the programs will go a long way to amplify the voice of those on the side of intercultural dialogue as one of the ways in arresting intercultural tensions in the communities.

According to the president of the Association of Cultural Journalists, Abongwa Fozo, the Anglophone crisis has been on the neck of cultural journalists in their day to day efforts to report and produced programs on culture. He also intimated that, cultural reporters face a lot of challenges on the field because; the concept of cultural journalism is new to them as they have always looked at culture to be the dresses and traditional dances.

Mr. Charles Nji impacted participants on skills on how to interview a cultural figure, how to pitch a cultural article, building a cultural audience among others.
