The City Mayor of Bamenda, Paul Achobong has announced plans to transform shops at the Bamenda Main Market as a means to prevent fire incidents witnessed in recent months.

Traders in various markets in town have suffered huge damages as a result of fire out breaks. The situation is compounded by the fact that most of the shops are built with makeshift material like wood while the electrical connections leave much to be desired.

To that effect, the City Mayor announced all the shops constructed with wood will be brought down making way for solid ones with cement bricks.

Mayor Achobong added that, the cable wiring system will also be adjusted in order to prevent fire disasters as those recently witnessed at the Nkwen, Food and Bamenda I markets.

The Mayor was speaking during the graduation ceremony and thanksgiving service of some 60 graduants from the Institute of Bible Studies in Bamenda, North West Region of Cameroon on Sunday July 11,2021.
"We are going to transform the wooden sheds in to cement block sheds and rehabilitate the wiring system of these sheds. This will happen so that, with the fluctuation of  electricity voltages, we will not be witnesses of the likes of Bamenda I, Nkwen and  Food Markets that suffered fire outbreaks causing enormous material damages," Mayor Achobong said.

Society watchers have said times without number that, markets in Bamenda were poorly constructed.

They said, the most sickening part of it is the way the markets were wired with electricity or utility cables not in good shape.

Many have raised the worry that, no shop will be spared in a situation where there is a fire outbreak if nothing is done to arrest the situation.

Another issue with the markets as indicated by many is that, the vehicles of the Army Rescue Unit cannot get in to them easily in case of a fire disaster and that, in a situation where their pipes cannot reach the point of a fire incident, it will end in tears.
