Mayor Chenwi says "we cannot watch as our roads dilapidate"

By Raymond Dingana

The Mayor of the Bamenda II Council has underscored the need for something to be done on the roads in Bamenda while waiting work proper to commence.

He says as local authorities, they cannot sit back and watch as the roads continue to deteriorate because they are waiting on those in charge to resume work on the roads.

Mayor Peter was speaking Friday November 5 2021 as he inspected repair works by the council on the portions of some roads around the entrance to Judicial Police in Bamenda and the temporal site of the council.

"Vehicles are getting bad every day , many cannot circulate in Bamenda again because of bad roads, the population is really suffering. We cannot keep waiting while our people continue to suffer so we decided to do something on the roads," Chenwi said.

The looks on the faces of those who used the portion of the road that was under repair showed signs of satisfaction as they spent lesser time driving pass the area as compared to the situation before.

"It may not have been a perfect job but it is better than nothing, I thank the mayor," Manfred, a cab driver in Bamenda said adding that, "something should really be done on the roads, the mayor's effort is temporary and will get back to its original state if something concrete is not done."

Others have also expressed the wish to see mayors enjoy more powers just like elected officials in other countries in Africa do.

"This will permit them do more for their people and not wait for Yaounde all the time," Etienne, a road user said.

Mayor chenwi also condemned the death of a young contractor killed by gun men around Mbinfibie Thursday November 4,2021.
