Passengers Escape Through Windows As Transport Bus Catches Fire

The Bus Being Consumed By Fire

By Raymond Dingana

Passengers who left Yaounde enrout to the South West Region of Cameroon via a VIP bus on the night of Friday November 10 have escaped death through the windows when their bus caught fire around Yasaa on the Yaounde-Douala highway.

Many passengers sustained serious wounds as they scrambled to make their way out through the windows given that the doors were locked when the fire erupted.

The bus was burnt to ashes including people's valuables. Many have blamed the incident on the negligence of the bus driver whom reports say failed to avoid the disaster by stopping the vehicle when the fire started on the punctured tyres.

According to a passenger who spoke to KCBS, he knew the journey was never going to be smooth because departure time was never respected,

" The first issue is that we left at 12:am instead of 10pm. When we hit the roads, one of the tyres behind got burst, a passenger shouted that 'driver, the tyre is burst,' but the driver said they are two tyres and rather accelerated. Few minutes later, there was another tyre puncture. He only stopped when we started perceiving a bad smell indicating something was burning."

Said a passenger who added that the driver parked the car,and went to check what was happening.

"He didn't even open the doors for us to get out thereby causing passengers to forced their way through the windows. Many sustained injuries. I don't even know where my brother is. We had old women and children in the bus, I don't even know how they managed to escape. All our belongings are gone."

He said the transport agency should pay for all what they lost in the fire incident and also take care of the medical bills of all those who sustained injuries.

One of the female passengers who said she escaped through the windows thanked God for preserving their lives.

Another passenger in a video that has gone viral disclosed that the bus passed at a check point but because the officers there were busy collecting monies from drivers,no one bordered to help the situation despite seeing the fire on the wheel compartment.

There are still unanswered questions as to why the driver didn't open the doors of the VIP bus belonging to Favour Express Bus Agency.

Despite the enormous material damage and the wounds sustained by the passengers, many have celebrated the fact that no one died in the incident.
