Rebranding North West:Vivian Kukah Advocates For Positive Communication for Sustainable Growth
By Anne-Valien Berinyuy
Since the Anglophone Crisis turned into armed conflict, communication about the situation has been mostly negative. Reports often focus on gun battles, deaths, and human rights violations. However, little attention is given to the positive developments happening in the North West Region (NWR) despite the ongoing conflict.
During a panel discussion at the North West Economic Forum on July 12, Vivian Kukah, a panelist emphasized the need for positive communication for the NWR. She pointed out that while the struggles are visible, there is also resilience and growth happening in communities.
"When we rebrand, we change how people see us,"
Kukah said.
"This change can lead to innovation and investment. The way we tell our story affects who wants to visit or invest in our region."She also mentioned various projects and entrepreneurial startups, particularly those led by young women, that are contributing to the region's growth which she said need the widest publicity.
"We need to highlight these development projects instead of focusing solely on the struggles as this would seduce investors to come in."
she added that
"Our rebranding must showcase what we have achieved together despite the challenges."
She stressed that communication should focus on the region’s resilience and its development goals, as this could encourage investment from the diaspora.

Unfortunately, negative communication on social media, particularly from former separatist fighters, and Ambazonia activists is not helping matters. While some of the ex fighters no longer carry weapons, they now use social media in ways that do not promote peace and development.
Analysts warn that this negative communication creates an unwelcoming atmosphere for investors reason why they should cautioned.
"If these young people can be guided, and encourage to engage in positive communication, it could help create a better environment for investment,"
said media enthusiast William A. who also highlighted a concerning comment he saw from a former fighter on social media.
