Electric Pole Collapses, Kills Electrician In Yaounde

Victim Lying Dead On The Ground

By Raymond Dingana

Electric poles which appear more like death traps, given their rotten nature, are found in many communities around Cameroon.

While some have already collapsed to the ground, others are still standing, perhaps waiting to fall on any unlucky individual.

The presence of these rotten poles is not only a danger to the population, but also to workers of the electricity company who from time to time climb them to carry out work.

On Saturday, June 6, 2026, an electrician died after a tragic accident in the Messassi neighbourhood of Yaounde. The victim was on an electric pole carrying out some work when the rotten pole collapsed, sending him crashing to the ground. He died on the spot.

The incident has triggered a barrage of comments about the condition of these poles, which are found in many neighbourhoods across the country.

Electric Pole Waiting To Fall On An Unlucky Individual

While these utility poles continue to exist in our neighbourhoods and authorities behave as if they do not see them, thereby exercising their usual careless attitude towards the well-being of community members, accidents like the one in Yaounde are going to keep happening.

This is why something must be done to replace them. Even though work to replace them has been ongoing in some parts of the country, many wonder why these poles still exist even in the heart of cities across Cameroon.
