A 31-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the death of a newborn baby whose body was discovered in a pit toilet in Cisia, Nkwen, Bamenda III Municipality.

The incident came to light after neighbours reportedly noticed blood stains around the woman's home. They became suspicious because the woman, who had recently been pregnant, was no longer showing signs of pregnancy.

Neighbours reportedly confronted her, but she denied knowing anything about the baby's whereabouts. The matter was later reported to the police, leading to her arrest.During questioning, the woman allegedly revealed what had happened to the baby.

The Army Rescue Unit, led by Commander Taku Paul, was called in to assist. Members of the unit reportedly retrieved the baby's body from the pit toilet.

According to information gathered during the investigation, the woman also mentioned a certain Saidou, identified as a traditional medicine practitioner, who allegedly provided her with the concoction she used to carryout the act. Saidou was subsequently arrested by security operatives for further investigation.

The woman was handed over to medical personnel for a medical examination before further questioning.

The case has once again raised questions about unwanted pregnancies, access to family planning information and the dangers of using unregulated substances to terminate pregnancies.

Community leaders, families and health workers are being encouraged to strengthen education on family planning and safe sex, while ensuring that women and girls have access to reliable reproductive health information and services.

The investigation is continuing, and the circumstances surrounding the baby's death are yet to be fully established.
