Youths in Menchum Division, North West Region of Cameroon have called on the government to revive the Wum Area Development Authority (WADA), arguing that creating jobs and restoring livelihoods are essential to achieving lasting peace in the area.
The appeal was made on Thursday, October 15, 2026, during the North West Community Dialogue at the Bamenda Congress Hall, led by Prime Minister and Head of Government, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute.
Speaking on behalf of the youths, Cameroon National Youth Council President for Menchum Division, Brian Mua, said unemployment had contributed to young people joining armed groups amid the ongoing conflict.
“In my division, Menchum, most youths went into the bushes because of no jobs,”
he said.
Mua explained that WADA, established in 1983, once employed about 7,000 skilled and unskilled workers before its collapse, leaving thousands without a major source of livelihood. He added that WADA supported agriculture, road construction and local businesses in the area.
Mua also argued that reviving WADA would create employment opportunities for young people in Menchum and neighbouring divisions, while helping to address poverty and other social challenges. He also accused the government of neglecting young people in the division.
“About 95 per cent of youths in Menchum are fending for themselves, with very little government support. Menchum has been forgotten,”
he lamented.
Appealing for government intervention, Mua said the youths were ready to support peace efforts if their concerns were addressed.
“The youths of Menchum have asked me to appeal to the government on their behalf. They are ready to cooperate with the authorities in any way necessary for peace to return, but they want WADA to be revived,”
he said
He summed up their demand in a direct appeal to the government:
“Give us jobs and we will ensure peace reigns.”
The call renews attention on demands to revive WADA as part of broader efforts to address unemployment, improve livelihoods and support peacebuilding in Menchum Division.
Mua was widely applauded for representing Menchum and drawing attention to the challenges facing youths in the division. In contrast, his counterpart from Mezam was criticised by some participants for appearing unprepared and repeatedly calling on God, Yahweh, to perform miracles instead of addressing the issues under discussion
