Promote Peace, Access To Justice, Social Cohesion-CHRAPA Tells Traditional Authorities

By Raymond Dingana in Bamenda.

Some traditional authorities drown from communities across the North West Region of Cameroon have gained skills on how to promote Peace, access to justice, social cohesion, public participation and leadership. This was in a two day training program for traditional authorities organized by the Center for Human Right and Peace Advocacy, CHRAPA. During the training program that ran from the 18th to the 19th day of October 2019 at the conference room of Mondial Hotel in Bamenda, Traditional Authorities were trained on how to Promote Peace, Social Cohesion, Access to Justice and Public Participation and Leadership. The training program also gave the traditional authorities the opportunity to gain knowledge on Conflict Resolution and management, Rights and Duties of individuals to the community, what the law says about Land Issues, Marriage and Divorce, Inheritance and WILL writing.
We have learnt so much about peace, we have had a lot of legal advice, especially on land issues, how to apply for a land certificate, and we have occupied lands for decades not knowing those lands does not belong to us because we don’t have land certificates. Many of us are into illegal relationships called marriages because there are not covered by marriage certificates, we have learnt how one can part ways if a marriage is not moving and above all, how we can bring back peace into our communities”. Said Mr. Nyah John Ayafor from Meshi in the Pinyin Clan.
Mr .Ngwanfobe Rudolph is a notable and a member of the Bali traditional council. Read him: “This is the right time for the right lessons we have learnt here because of the crises we are undergoing. This will help us to let them know that, peace and social cohesion is an important element in the society. This will enable us to see how we can approach the population and give them an educative talk on peace and social cohesion”.
Ngwa Martin is from Mankon traditional council. He says all what he got from the training program will be taken back to the community: “The knowledge we have gotten here especially on divorce and how to write a WILL , and that a will must be written when one is sound and knows everything about his or her family, not when the person is sick or incapacitated in one way or the other, obtaining a land certificate and many others. These are some of the things we shall be sharing with our communities”.
HRH, Fonguh Henry is traditional ruler of Nkup Bome in Mbengwi sub division, NWR of Cameroon: “I have learnt how to talk peace without stepping on some body’s toes all thanks to CHRAPA. From the debate we had here, we came to realize that, some traditional authorities are corrupt and are in to partisan politics which have negatively affected their role as peace promoters. If elites take their responsibilities in providing for their leaders, they will not stay away from all acts that divide the people”.
Among those whom attended the training program organized by CHRAPA were the Fon of Barakwe, Fon Teghem , of Ngyen Mbo, Mbe  Forgwe, and  Fon of Meshi in the Pinyin Clan.
