President of NWRA, Fru Angwafo III Addressing Members

By Raymond Dingana

The Executive President of the North West Regional Assembly, (NWRA) has appealed to all and sundry to put hands on deck and save the environment which by extension is saving mankind.

Hon.Fru Angwafo III was speaking on day one of the NWRA March 2023 Ordinary Session that opened at the auditorium of the institution in Bamenda, Monday April 17,2023 with theme: 2023 Performance and Account Session

He refreshed the memories of members of the house and those hearing for the first time the recent environmental damages recorded when nature turned it's urgly face on the inhabitants of Nwa,Ndu and also in Bamenda when flood waters violated the private space of households causing enormous damages.

The violent storms in Oku and Nwa with extensive property damage are a warning begging for concerted action. Concretely, all members of the house are urged to commit to appropriate tree planting through direct manual labor (HILA) in our community decentralized activities,

Hon.Fru Angwafo said before continuing that

The recent floods in Bamenda are a poignant reminder of our social responsibility to educate, uneducate and re-educate on man's role and responsibility in curbing the dangers of climate change. The wanton destruction of forest cover, disregard for town planning and nature protection regulations must be everyone's concern.

The President of the NWRA also indicated that in December 2021, powers were devolved to Regions by the state in many  domains including the Environment,  Housing and Town planning, just to name but these.

Recent Floods In Bamenda

Man activities on the environment has been qualified by many as "man digging his own grave." This to many environmentalists has to do with man's activities like water pollution, deforestation, bush burnings, land reclamation, poor waste management amongst others which are casing the environment to bleed.

In one of her quotes, Windell Berry said: "The earth is what we all have in common," a message interpreted by many as a call to action to protect the environment for future generations.
