ESU Community Rejects Menchum SDO’s Calls For Applications To Occupy Vacant Stool

At The Press Conference In Douala

The Esu Community has frantically rejected the Menchum Divisional officer’s press release requesting that persons interested to occupy the vacant Esu Kingdom throne forward their application files to him.

ESU community made up of the Youths, Chiefs, the Clergy, lawyers, teachers and the civil society vented their wrath against the Menchum SDO’s release Saturday during a press conference in Douala.

The Menchum Prefect, Abdoullahi Alliou, siting law number 77/245 of 15th July 1977, had on the 8th of June released a document requesting that persons interested to become the King of ESU submit letters of application to him from which he will appoint a king to sit on the vacant throne in the Kingdom of ESU.

Rev. Dr. MIH Clement KUM, chairman of the ESU Cultural and Development Association Caretaker committee lambasted Menchum SDO for making such a reckless, dull and unwitty request. He intimidated that the Prefect’s press release goes against the tradition, custom and culture of the ESU people and entreated the civil administrator to respect the culture and tradition of every people whosesoever he is sent to work.

Barrister Kum Charles, during the press conference said Mr. Abdoullahi Alliou through his press release has violated the laws of Cameroon and other International conventions by acting out of the boundaries of his authority. He sited article 7, 10, 11, 12 and 15 of law number 77/245 of 15th July 1977.

As Article 8 of law No 77/24 stipulate, Art 10 of the same law Supra stipulate that in case of vacancy of the throne, the administrative authority shall without delay proceed to make necessary consultation with view to appointing a new fon.

According to the Barrister, this is something the SDO failed to adhere to thereby going against the laws of the country Cameroon.

The Barrister accused the Menchum Prefect for violating article 15 of the law which states that it is the responsibility of the Minister of Territorial Administration, Atanga Nji Paul to preside over consultation talks that may lead up to the enthronement of a second class traditional ruler as is the case with the Kingdom of ESU. He said the SDO’s press release portrays that he has usurp the authority of the minister of territorial administration.

Quoting article  11 and 12 of the same law, Barrister Kum Charles rebuked Menchum SDO for stopping a peaceful come together amongst the ESU people meant to deliberate on issues related to the Vacant throne of ESU Kingdom. To him, this is a violation of article 12 of the same law the civil administration is claiming to uphold. He said Mr. Abdoullahi Alliou failed to consult the ESU King Makers and other competent authorities concerned with enthronement in the Kingdom of ESU.

Mr. KAH Blasius BIN, representative of the King of ESU in Littoral South drilled pressmen and women on the enthronement custom as practiced in the Kingdom of ESU. In his presentation, he explained that three institutions are involved in the enthronement of a King in the Kingdom of ESU. These institutions are the Kingmakers (Chiefs of all the 24 villages making up the Kingdom of ESU), the Queen Mothers known as Ufap and the Notables known as Ntsu.

In the case of a King’s disappearance,  these three institutions in unison and representing the entire Kingdom are responsible for requesting a new king from the Wimeh Village. The wimen village will then request the royal family to produce a king. This is what kick starts the process of searching for a new King. Once the Royal family produce a king, the King is presented to the wimeh village, the wimeh village  presents the King to the chiefs, Ntsu and the queen mothers for the performance of traditional rites and rituals. Performance of these rites and rituals launches the enthronement process. Upon completion of rites, the king is presented to the administrative authorities who then jump -start the consultation process as indicated in law number 77/245 of 15th July 1977.

said Mr. Kah .

Fang Gideon, National president of Youths in the Kingdom of ESU who took part in the press conference, said the ESU people believe that their late King, Kum-a-chuo II was assassinated for his refusal to sell communal land to some unscrupulous Business men.

We believe that the assassination of the King has to do with foul play. The people believe he was assassinated for standing up for them and for refusing to sell community land.

He appealed to the government to intensify investigations in to the matter and bring the perpetrators to be brought to book.
