By Raymond Dingana

It was with pomp and pageantry that children admitted at the Regional Hospital Bamenda and others fete Christmas with the administration and staff of the health facility over the weekend.

This was during the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony of the hospital presided at by the Director,  Dr. Denis Nsame at the B-Ward esplanade popularly known as Children's Ward.

Though sick, the children could be seen putting on broad smiles with lots of energy, dancing to the rhythms of Christmas Carols, a scene that left many with wet eyes, signifying tears of joy.

It was also an indication that they have been longing to catch such fun described by many as 'a kind of healing therapy for the kids.'

Among those who answered present to celebrate Christmas with the administration and staff of the Regional Hospital were kids living with sickle cell, HIV, Diabetes, and those for vaccination.

Addressing the children, the head of the B-Ward, Mdm Ngwandi Pascaline said among others that their biggest dream for 2024 as far as B-Ward is concerned is to have an Emergency Pediatric Health Care Service and to achieve the Adolescent Health Clinic to move on as planned. For this to happen, she said they have to do a lot radio and online sensations.

On his part, the Director of the Hospital, Dr Denis Nsame after listening with undivided attention the challenges facing the various health units especially the sickle cell unit, he made this big announcement:

"We need to have a lab at the Sickle Cell Clinic . I promise that it will be done next week."

The announcement was interrupted with a thunderous applause before he could continue.

"You will not need to move to the lab to cue up again for these our children who come for sickle cell clinic every first Saturday of the month,"

 Dr. Denis Nsame declared.

The health practitioner also indicated that those admitted in Chronic Care Clinic, Pediatric Center of Excellence, Sickle Cell Clinic among others received gifts from the hospital.

"The uniqueness of this year is that we have a lot of partners like Mary Allieh Foundation, Open Dreams, The Baptist church. When we talk about Christmas we mean love."

He also indicated that with the crisis in the region that has rendered many persons poor, when they fall sick and are brought to the hospital, they end up not being able to pay bills, and so they have a situation of unpaid bills at the hospital.

"Because our job is to safe lives, we treat and wait for the bills to be paid later, but when it stays for too long and they can't pay, it becomes challenging meanwhile we need the resources to run the hospital."

The Regional Hospital Christmas Tree Lighting also saw the distribution of Christmas items to those that were at the esplanade and those lying in the wards.

Both the kids and their parents were all joy as many of the sick children were already being distracted by the Christmas packages thereby given their parents some time to relax.

"My name is Precilia, I am here with my daughter. She is a sickler and has not been feeling too well. I thank the Regional Hospital for the Christmas gift. I can see a dull, water bottle and others. You can see her already playing with the dull."

"My name is Ajara, I want to thank the Regional Hospital for the gifts. I want to thank them. He is already playing with them."

The event also saw some young persons living with HIV and Diabetes dishing out words of encouragement to all those who are still finding it hard to accept their status.
