Food Items To Be Destined For Needy Persons In the NWR

By Raymond Dingana

The socio-political upheavals degrading lives in Cameroon's Anglophone North West and South West Regions has not ceased to produce vulnerable persons in this crisis hit parts of the country.

The situation is so bad that many can't afford a three square meal per day, not to talk of adequate medical care, among others.

As end of year festivities come knocking, one need not a soothsayer to be told that persons who have been facing challenges through out the year would surely face same during this period of feasting.

It is for this reason and many others that the North West Regional Assembly (NWRA) in collaboration with The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) decided to offer Christmas goodies to the affected population especially Persons with Disabilities, PWDs, Internally Displaced, Persons,IDPs, the Elderly and many others.

During the 3rd edition of the North West Christmas and Cultural Festival organized by the NWRA in collaboration with UNDP that took place Friday December 15th,2023 at the esplanade of the office of the Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam, chaired by the President of the North West House of Chiefs, Fon Kevin Yakum Teuvih, the beneficiaries received bags of rice, groundnut oil, salt, buckets, just to name but these.

"I think all of us are aware of what the North West Region has become. There are some class of people who are vulnerable during normal periods but now we are in a crisis period and you can imagine their level of vulnerability. So we thought it necessary that as end of year festivities draw near, we should celebrate Christmas with them by offering donating to the needy,"

said Fon Kevin Yakum of Bambalang, a village in the crisis ravaged region.

The traditional leader also indicated that it was an opportunity to celebrate the culture of the people, something that has not been possible in many parts of the crisis battered region for years now.

Also present at the event was the North West Regional Coordinator of UNDP, Mary Nyuyinwi who explained why their focus was also on Youths.

"The Youths are the future of tomorrow and everything in our society is either led or killed by the Youths. We truly want to support youths' initiatives. We donated laptops, and we expecting them to bring us good projects that will help them get self employed and also employ their fellow women and together we can talk about better development and recovery of our region."

On their part, the beneficiaries sent words of thanks to the donors saying they are sure of a good end of year feast.

"As a person with disabilities, I  received a bucket with two bags of rice, soap, salt and many other. I won't stress this end of year as far as food is concerned. I thank the donors,"

said one of the beneficiaries.

The Christmas and Cultural Festival targeted 500 IDPs, 150 disadvantaged  students, Youth groups from all seven divisions of the region and many others as indicated by the organizers.
