NWRA June Ordinary Session: Lele Lafrique Sounds Alarm Bell On Climate Change

North West Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique, State's Representative on the occasion of the North West Regional Assembly (NWRA) June 2024 Ordinary Session has stated that the region is facing an unprecedented level of climate change which has come along with heavy rains and floods.

Speaking on day one of the June 15 Ordinary Session on Monday July 22, 2024, Lele Lafrique said concerted efforts are needed to address the situation.

"The challenges the region is facing need concerted efforts. Climate Change has come along with heavy rains and floods like the recent cases that affected the neighborhoods of Ntahsen, Mulang, Below Foncha amongst others, were over 33 households were flooded after heavy rains."

He also invited the Regional Assembly to address the situation and make available relief supplies to the affected population. Governor Lele enjoined the Assembly to pay particular attention to projects that are resilient to climate change.

Governor Lele's Proposed Solutions To Those Living In Flood-Prone Areas

Apart from indicating that the climate change situation in the region needs concerted efforts to mitigate, the State's representative called on the population living in danger zones to evacuate.

"I am appealing to those residing on risk zones to evacuate those areas for their own safety. Municipal and administrative authorities should look for a new place to settle the affected population," 

Lele Lafrique added.

He also acknowledged that something has been done towards resettling some of those that have taken refuge in risky areas around the region.

Lele Lafrique Expresses Dismay At Those Disobeying Calls To Abandon Danger Zones

Lele Lafrique expressed dissatisfaction at those who haven't heeded the calls for them to stop occupying danger zones. However, he didn't come out clear on what has been done concretely to allocate a new settlement area for those residing in danger zones.
