Members of the Abakwa People, a WhatsApp platform in Bamenda, gathered for their first physical meeting, celebrating the opportunity to connect and put faces to the names that populate the forum.

While the primary aim was to foster better relationships, the meeting also provided a chance for members to discuss the group's future direction.

"We will enhance social cohesion, promote peace, and continue being one another's keeper, which are some of the key aims for creating this group,"

said Ndefru Melanie Mafor, the group's founder.

Ndefru Melanie, a Bamenda-based journalist, noted the importance of steering minds away from the negativity stemming from the nine-year Anglophone Crisis in Anglophone Cameroon, which has devastated many lives. She created the Abakwa People platform to support individuals facing various challenges.

The group aims to keep members informed about the latest happenings in Bamenda, and the North-West Region as a whole, while also exposing them to genuine opportunities that could improve their lives. Furthermore, it focuses on strengthening social cohesion.

The platform connects individuals from the Northwest Region, regardless of their current location. Many members have praised the group for its organization and adherence to rules, which allow time for business promotion and discussions on important societal issues that are educational.

Like many female journalists in the region, Ndefru Melanie has faced her own struggles due to the crisis. However, she remains committed to initiating ideas that can inspire hope among members.
