A 2-day-workshop to train journalists who are all members of the Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ) held in Bafoussam on June 12 and 13,2025.

Organized by the National office of CAMASEJ, with support from Open Society Foundations, the capacity building workshop also saw the unveiling of a security handbook for journalists especially those operating in crisis battered North West and South West regions of the country.

The handbook encompasses guidelines for both online and offline safety, offering practical tips on preparation before covering a story and protocols to follow during coverage.

The handbook, comprising four chapters, was developed as part of the project: "Optimizing media engagement in peace efforts in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon through increased media participation," funded by Open Society Foundations and implemented by CAMASEJ.

This initiative aims to fortify media men and women with essential safety guidelines, and best practices to sail through the challenges of reporting in crisis battered areas.

Reflecting on the evolution of election coverage in Cameroon amid ongoing shifts in the media landscape, one of the workshop’s key facilitators, Dr.Mbinglo Gilles, emphasized the importance of mastering the country’s electoral code and constitution.

He encouraged journalists to carry not only these legal texts but also their Bibles and the Quran close to heart, symbolizing a commitment to both professional integrity and moral responsibility.

Participants at the workshop were urged to guide citizens towards making informed decisions during electoral seasons. This includes providing accurate information on candidates and institutions while upholding the legal and ethical frameworks that govern the electoral process in Cameroon.

As the nation prepares for the elections, all eligible citizens are encouraged to register and participate fully in all phases of the democratic process. Meanwhile, journalists are expected to carry out their duties with a deep respect for the laws of the Republic and the principles of responsible journalism.
