Ruth Che Wachong has been elected as the new President of the Cameroon Journalists Trade Union (CJTU NW). The election took place on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the conference room of the North West Branch office of the Cameroon Human Rights Commission. Che Wachong’s list was unopposed during the Elective General Assembly, reflecting the trust members have in her leadership. She makes history as the first female journalist to lead the trade union.

Taking over from Comrade Nji Ignatius, who served for a two-year term within a four-year mandate, Che Wachong emphasized the importance of membership, stating that it is one of the greatest strengths of any trade union.

"We will work towards registering as many members as possible. Many have left for various reasons, and we are targeting both old and new members so that together, we can address the challenges faced by journalists in the region,

said Che Wachong, the newly elected president of CJTU NW.

The past four years were challenging for Comrade Nji Ignatius and his team. He expressed his hope that his successor would not face the same difficulties he encountered during his presidency.

"We faced numerous challenges: Anye Nde Nsoh was killed, Ambe McMillan and Frederick Takang were abducted, and Wawa Jackson was arrested and jailed for a long time after challenging certain individuals, getting tagged in the ongoing crisis. As a trade union, we must defend our members against all forms of attack,"

said President Emeritus, Comrade Nji Ignatius.

Ruth Che Wachong now has the critical task of ensuring that journalism practices align with the laws governing the profession and addressing issues harmful to journalistic integrity.
