Minister Nalova Lyonga Expresses Shock At Bamenda's Road Infrastructure, Sympathizes With Population

Secondary Education Minister Prof. Nalova Lyonga has voiced deep concerns regarding the deteriorating state of roads in Bamenda. In what analysts describe as a rare outing from a government official especially, at a time when some North West (NW) elite seem hesitant to address the issue candidly, Nalova Lyonga won the hearts of the population by discussing the road conditions without reservation.

Her remarks came during Prime Minister Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute’s three-day working visit to the NW region to among others chair the 7th Steering Committee meeting of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development (PPRD) of the NW/SW regions of Cameroon.

As part of a high-level delegation accompanying the Prime Minister on inspections of PPRD project sites, including the University of Bamenda (UBa), Nalova expressed visible dismay at the state of infrastructure.

After technical presentations from the Ministers of Housing and Urban Development, Celestine Ketcha Courtes, and Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, on projected construction plans for Bamenda, she emphasized the urgent need for practical solutions rather than empty promises.

“I will say that let us not make promises we cannot fulfill. Let's make a promise short; even for one or two months, do what you can do, and the population will see the results. Let's avoid high-sounding promises that we can't deliver,”

said Nalova.

Critiquing the fragile nature of the region's infrastructure, she highlighted the necessity for durability and sustainability to ensure long-term development.

“People will cry and cry because of bad roads, and we say we will fix the situation, only to have it washed out after one month,” she noted.

Works on 5.6 km Urban Crossing To Commence Soon

PM Dione Ngute

While closing the 7th session of the steering committee of the PPRD for the North West and South West regions, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute urged Public Works Minister Emmanuel Nganou Djomessi to initiate work on Bamenda's urban roads as soon as possible.

Nganou Djomessi who spoke earlier stated that “The work will soon commence within a maximum of two or three weeks on the 6.5 km urban stretch in the city of Bamenda.

Roads in Bamenda are in dire need of rehabilitation. The Cow Street stretch, for instance, appeared as if tar had never existed, with mud everywhere. Users reported that soil was added to improve conditions, but the situation worsened.

With numerous promises regarding the start of road works in Bamenda, residents remain hopeful that actual work will commence soon.
