The Street 4 neighborhood in Mulang, Bamenda II Council area, is in shock after a child drowned in a river in the area.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, when the child and three others were playing in the river; however, other sources suggest they were fishing.
Eyewitnesses alleged that just as they were about to leave, the child was captivated by the size of a fish he saw. In an attempt to catch it, he found himself in a part of the river from which he could not easily escape.
His friends waited for him, but when he did not return, they raised the alarm. Neighbors gathered and were able to retrieve the body, which was then taken to a health facility on a motorbike as explained by a voice in a video shared on Abakwa FM Radio Pidgin News WhatsApp group. At press time, it was unclear whether the child had survived.
Despite warnings for parents to ensure their children do not play near rivers, especially given the recent heavy rains, this advice seems to be falling on deaf ears.
Children are still seen playing in heavy rain, with some near water bodies, seemingly unaware of the dangers.
Some blame the lockdown imposed by separatist groups, noting that the child could have been in school if not for the lockdown which paralyzed the town on Tuesday.
As the wet season intensifies, parents are urged to closely monitor their children and keep them safe.
